BAKER — A Holt woman was killed Wednesday morning when her pickup truck left State Road 189 north of Baker.

Melissa Parker, who was 30, hit a culvert, went airborne, took out a telephone pole, crashed into the ground and was ejected, according to Baker Fire District Chief Dusty Talbert.

"She flew through the air more than 100 feet before landing on the doorstep of someone's home," he said.

She died on the way to the hospital, Talbert said.

Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office got a 911 call just after 6:30 a.m. that reported a woman was lying in the front yard of a home. She was still breathing, the caller said.

Deputies arrived first, followed closely by fire crews. The crash happened on Highway 189 south of Hester Church Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol media release.

Power lines were down across the road, which was closed until crews could arrive.

The truck was destroyed and almost unrecognizable, Talbert said. The front wheel came off.

Emergency crews called for a medical helicopter, but none would fly because of cloudy and windy conditions. Parker was on her way to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center in an ambulance when she died.

There were no passengers in her vehicle.

She was not wearing a seatbelt, the FHP release said.
