CRESTVIEW — Northwood Arts and Science Academy will soon appear even livelier thanks to a $500 mini-grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation.

School librarian and visual art instructor Kristal Petruzzi, who applied for the grant earlier this year, was informed it had been awarded following the April 29-30 rainstorm.

"I am so dang excited!" Petruzzi said. "It’s to create a wall-sized mural with the kids for our library."

First, students will study artist and writer Ezra Jack Keats, who wrote and illustrated children's books.

Keats wrote the 1963 Caldecott Medal-winning "The Snowy Day," now considered a classic of illustrated children's literature.

He was noted for using collages in his illustrations, which Petruzzi said the school's mural will use.

"I’m going to let every single kid participate next year — it’s going to be awesome!" she said.
