Prep Roundup (3/13)

Fort Walton Beach continued to steam roll its way past the field in Saturday’s Ram Invitational, winning the annual track and field meet on both the boys’ and girls’ sides and doing so in impressive fashion.

The Viking boys remained unbeaten (3-0) on the year thanks in large part to Fort Walton Beach’s supremacy in the running events, where Fort Walton Beach won all but two races. Fort Walton Beach finished with 126 team points, easily surpassing the next closest school, Bay, which finished with 74. Niceville (73) finished third while South Walton finished tied for fifth with Jefferson County with 41 team points.

Joe Lofton won the long jump (20-.75) while Maurice Williams placed first in the triple jump (41-5.5) for the Vikings. Josh Simmons won both the discus (123-6) and shot put (42-7). Deiontrez Mount won the 110 hurdles (14.48).

Niceville’s Bobby Kressin won the high jump with a leap of 6-2 while Jason Riggs won the 3200 with a time of 10:08, narrowly edging Fort Walton Beach’s Jake Dearmon (10:12) and Sam Ammons (10:20).

South Walton, meanwhile, had a pair of top finishers in the pole vault as Ian Towne finished first (12-6) and D.J. Striedel came in third (11-0).

On the girls’ side, the Vikings’ win was not nearly as one-sided, but thanks to a one-two finish by Holly Stanton and Ivy Chastain, respectively, in the 3200, Fort Walton Beach was able to squeak past Port St. Joe 102.5-101 after falling to Tiger Sharks by a point in the school’s previous meeting.

South Walton placed fourth (52) while Niceville ended the day fifth with 49 points.

“Holly and Ivey were a great one-two punch for us,” Vikings coach Lissette Moller-Fields said. “That’s what clinched it for us on the girls’ side.”

Stanton won the 3200 with a time of 11:50 with Chastain nipping on her heels at a clip of 11:55. Niceville’s Laura Nelson placed third with a time of 12:18.

Fort Walton Beach’s Grace Fuller won the pole vault competition (8-0) while Kadijah Mount (long jump, 15-11.5) and Morgan McLaughlin (discus, 97-4) each won their respective events.

South Walton’s Tiffany Snider won the shot put (34-3) and placed third in the discus (88-3) while teammate Jessica Harrison won the high jump (4-10).
