Up on the Hill 6-22

The Hilltoppers arrived at the Laurel Hill Grill under the cover of umbrellas on Tuesday. The rain came down to soak the parched earth and we were happy to see and feel it. Cassie determined that her blueberry bushes would be happy. The sun came out before we left to our delight. Seven young at heart ladies met for the monthly lunch together. We missed several ladies with good excuses, other than the rain, for not attending.

Laurel Hill's citizen of the year, Dr. Mabel Jean Morrison, Eula Mae Harrison, Norma Flournoy, Cassie Rogers, Bertie Ann Curenton and McDonald Campbell enjoyed the fellowship. Jennifer, our attentive waitress, prepared for us in the private party room at the Grill. We encourage neighboring ladies to attend and enjoy a time out from your normal routine on the third Tuesday of each month at 11 a.m.

The good rainfall that we are enjoying is also causing the grass to grow rapidly at the Almarante Cemetery. If you have not made a summer donation it is not too late! The Almarante Cemetery Commission appreciates the maintenance donations by owners of cemetery plots and friends. You may hand it to one of the clerks at City Hall during business hours.

Laurelhillnow.com is a Web site that has information about Almarante Cemetery. You will find history and a listing of those buried there.

The new Laurel Hill City Council and mayor are working together on major issues of growth. I left Thursday evening’s meeting encouraged on several decisions made. It is not a time for sissies to be on the council! These are men and women with a willingness to serve the needs of fast arriving major growth. Being creative is an understatement that this council has to deal with pertaining to financial issues in the coming year. They need supportive residents to attend meetings and understand what and how they are dealing with city problems as well as progressions.

Councilman Johnny James and other volunteers coach the Laurel Hill T-Ball team at Gene Clary City Park. The games are well attended by parents and friends cheering the youngsters in their best efforts on the field. The community appreciates the volunteer coaches working with our children.

Her book, "A Still Small Voice" by Laurel Hill author Shirley Simmons, is available on Amazon.com. Also, her Web site is SisterShirley.com or call (850) 652-4516. This is an enjoyable, inspiring reading from our local neighbor and Laurel Hill City Clerk.

The nation celebrates in red, white and blue on July 4th! Kim Senterfitt celebrates her special happy birthday with family and friends on the same day.

Flashback in memory: Friends and neighbors paid their last respects at a memorial service for Miss Pearl Tyner, June 16, 2006. Her last wish was carried out as her friends were invited to lunch at Regency Inn, in a spirit of celebration of our Laurel Hill Pearl.

Our beloved Laurel Hill resident, Jacquelyn Matthews, entered into her eternal reward on June 17, 2005. She was a woman who served the Lord faithfully wherever she was and is deeply missed by her family and friends.

You shall have only a full and honest weight; you shall have only a full and honest measure, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

- Deuteronomy 25:13-16
