STAFF PICKS
“Nina Simone, The Biography,” David Brun-Lambert. (B Simone) This biography tells the whole story of Ms. Simone’s extraordinary life. She was truly a great artist who inspired audiences with her spiritually charged, high-drama performances. In an effort to understand Nina, the author begins the story with the birth of Eunice Kathleen Waymon, born in North Carolina, who grows up to become Nina Simone. Eunice was a gifted child and her parents dreamed of her becoming the first black classical concert pianist, but this dream was shattered when at the age of 20 her application to study at the Curtis Institute was rejected. The author believes that “Eunice Waymon died on that day along with her dreams. But her anger never did – it persisted, swelled, grew, until another creature entirely came into being, belligerent, charismatic, resolute, gifted; Nina Simone. An artist with a mission.”
“Stormy Weather the Life of Lena Horne,” James Gavin. (B Horne)
Ms. Horne, the regal and classy actress and singer gained recognition from the Cotton Club’s golden era and the back lots of Hollywood’s biggest studios to the glitz of Vegas. This biography is an account of her experiences as she broke the racial barriers in the entertainment industry.
