Check It Out; Need a job?
Need a job? The U. S. Census Bureau is looking to hire.
Every 10 years a census of our population is conducted. The results help determine how federal funds are spent in our community on things like roads, parks, and other public and social services. Retail companies use census data to determine locations for new stores. Boundaries for state and local legislative and congressional districts are also determined by this important count.
In March 2010, more than 130 million addresses across the nation will receive a census questionnaire---10 questions taking about 10 minutes to complete and mail back. The local Crestview Complete Count Committee (of which the library is a member) is working hard to get the word out on the importance of every household in north Okaloosa County returning this questionnaire.
But we all know there will always be residents moving and other reasons that census questionnaires are not returned. Thousands of census takers are needed for temporary jobs. They work in their own communities, locating households, explaining the purpose of the census, conducting personal interviews with households who failed to return their questionnaires, and recording their responses on paper forms. In most cases, a valid driver’s license and use of a vehicle are required to work as a census taker.
The job pays $12 an hour for 20 to 40 hours of work per week and typically includes evenings and weekends. Testing for census taker positions is held here in the library meeting room every Friday at 8:45 a.m. (And I have sample tests here at the reference desk, so don’t let test phobia stop you!) For more information or other testing times call 1-866-861-2010.
PROGRAMS
Carols, crafts, cookies! Celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa with us tomorrow night.
Our sixth annual Noel Night begins at 6 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m. The Baker High School Chorus led by Betty Avery and a worship music team from Emmanuel Baptist Church will fill the library with Christmas music. The Evelenar Baptist Church dance teams will perform. Crafters come early. We’ll do crafts while supplies last.
When you finish your crafts, or if you’re not into crafts, scavenge the library and win a prize. You can also win a prize by playing dreidel. We may even have a surprise visit from . . . well, you’ll just have to see for yourself!
This event is free to you, thanks to our Friends of the Library. If you’d like to give back to our community, please bring a nonperishable item, and we’ll make sure it gets to Sharing and Caring. This is also a good time to clear up those old library fines with our “one can equals one dollar” amnesty during December. Some limits apply, but this is great for that movie you thought a family member had returned and it racked up $1 a day fine!
STAFF PICKS
“Say You’re One of Them” by Uwem Akpan (Fic Akp) Each of the five stories in this acclaimed collection and Oprah Book Club pick pays tribute to the wisdom and resilience of African children, even in the face of the most agonizing circumstances.
“Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” by Robert M. Pirsig (917.304 Pir) A narration of a summer motorcycle trip undertaken by a father and his son, the book becomes a personal and philosophical odyssey into fundamental questions of how to live.
The narrator’s relationship with his son leads to a powerful self-reckoning as “the craft of motorcycle maintenance leads to an austerely beautiful process for reconciling science, religion, and humanism.” Called possibly the best philosophy book ever written, this 25th anniversary edition includes a new introduction by the author and a reader’s guide.
