Check It Out

Today as we celebrate Veteran’s day we all should make an effort to say “Thank You, for your service,” to all military persons that we meet. Often I see young men and women come into the library to meet with recruiters. They are excited, happy and ready to sign up for military service.

I’m sure my “Uncle Windsor,” at the age of 19, was just as excited to join the Air Force during WWII. Uncle Windsor Lewis, who is actually my husband’s uncle, enlisted in the Air force and was sent to basic training at Tuskegee Army Airfield in Tuskegee, Ala., where he trained as an Armament/Gunner.

Little did he know that the unit he was joining would become the historical Tuskegee Airmen. The Tuskegee Airmen was a group of dedicated, determined young men who enlisted to become America's first black military airmen. For 2.5 years, Uncle Windsor was in an Army Air Corps flying squadron support unit. He saw his combat support duty in Italy as a member of the 99th Fighter Squadron commanded by Lt. General Benjamin O. Davis, who was the first African American General.

I salute all veterans and I know that those who are serving today deserve our respect and honor. I say, “Thank you,” to those who have served and are serving today. Thank you Uncle Windsor!

Staff Picks:

“African Americans in the United States Army in World War II,” Bryan D. Booker (940.54 Boo).

Bryan Booker began his research in 1990 while a graduate student at Fayetteville State University after discovering that the 30 –year-old study done by Ulysses Lee was the primary document for the role of African Americans in World War II. This book is a comprehensive, authoritative history of African American soldiers in World War II. It focuses on the struggles of African American men and women to overcome racism and become accepted in the military and the accomplishments they achieved in the war. Recommended.

“The Military Father: A Hands-on Guide for Deployed Dads,” Armin A Brott, (355.12 Br).

The author Armin A. Brott is a former Marine and he has written several books on fatherhood. This book is an excellent resource for dads looking for advice on how to be involved with their family before, during and after their deployment. He has many cartoon illustrations in the book that are contributions from servicemen and their families. It is a fun book to read and share with your families.

Quote:

The history of the United States is steeped in contributions of the Air Force, formerly Army Air Corps, in preserving and maintaining freedom. The American airmen have been victorious in all of our nation's conflicts. It is important that we continue to acknowledge the sacrifices and service of these men who perform so admirably. I know the accomplishments of the brave and dedicated Tuskegee Airmen will never be forgotten.”

President Ronald Reagan
