The student council raised $900 from a superhero-themed "war ball" benefit; that's just $100 less than last year's event proceeds, organizer Lori Eckels said.

"The idea is do something for all of the kids, and they obviously think this is fun," she said.

And it's familiar, student council members Emily Grace Robinson and Erica Kile, both 12, said.

"(War ball) is a game that all of the students who take (physical education) play," Erica said.

Like in dodge ball, rival teams must eliminate other teams by throwing foam balls at each other. The team with the most players left standing at the end of a game wins the match.

"It's just fun," participant Ryan Watson, 14, said.

More than 100 students played the game in the gymnasium, and several wore capes and sported logos of favorite superheroes, like Superman, the Flash and Captain America. A few students wore chicken and banana costumes.

The council which raised money by selling $5 admission tickets and concessions plans to schedule another war ball benefit later this year.
