BAKER — With two months until the District 3-1A tournament the Baker School baseball team still has plenty of time to improve and get a good seeding.

The Gator weaknesses surfaced Thursday night in their district opener in a 12-5 to Northview High School.

“We have to get back to the basics,” Baker Coach Adam Henry said after the Gators (1-3, 0-1) made five errors. “We are throwing the ball way too many times. If you throw that many times something bad is going to happen so we have to get back to the basics.

“We had plenty of chances. We have to get the ball out of the infield for one thing. We’ve got to be able to hit the ball, that’s our major problem right now.”

The Chiefs (3-0, 2-1) scored their 12 runs on just 10 hits. And while the Gators had five errors go on the books they made several other mental mistakes that led to Northview scores.

Northview took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Gators came back and tied things up in the bottom of the inning.

Baker was forced to try and play catch up the rest of the game when Northview scored three runs in the third.

Kyle Davis picked up Baker’s first hit of the game in the fourth inning  on a shot deep in the hole to shortstop. Davis took second base on a throwing error by Chief shortstop Brannon Freeman.

Bubba Ellis entered the game as a courtesy runner for Davis and scored as Austin Davis was safe on Freeman’s second error of the inning. Austin Davis scored when Travis Farmer reached on Freeman’s third miscue.

Northview added two more runs in the fifth inning, three in the sixth inning and three in the seventh inning.

Ellis beat out an infield single with one out in the sixth and scored when Farmer was safe on an error. Farmer scored on a wild pitch to close out the Baker scoring.

Kyle Davis led the Gators with three hits. Austin Davis, Jacob Nixon, Mason Lowery and Ellis each had a hit for Baker.
