CRESTVIEW — It's been more than four years since Crestview High School's wrestling team hosted a home match.
That all changes Wednesday when the Bulldogs host Gulf Breeze in the Bulldog Brawl. The match starts at 6:30 p.m.
The plan was to have several teams attend the match, but things didn't work out that way, Bulldog Coach Andrew Black said.
"We did schedule four or five teams," he said. "A lot of counties, like Santa Rosa County, don't like to wrestle on Wednesday because it's a church night, and I completely understand that."
The Bulldogs will still be tested in the dual match with a strong Dolphin squad.
"It's extremely hard to schedule in our gym, with Coach (Kathy) Combest having girls freshman, JV and varsity basketball teams, and Coach (Greg) Watson (boys coach) with his basketball team," Black said. "But the match is going to be with Gulf Breeze, one of the powerhouse teams in the area."
Former Bulldog wrestling Coach Jeff Fowler, who now coaches Niceville, put on great wrestling tournaments, Black said. Now Black, in his second year as the Bulldog coach, is ready to host his first tournament.
"I'm super-excited," he said. "I'm not excited for me, but for the kids. The kids don't get to be seen at home.
"They (usually) don't get to be seen by the fans, the school, the teachers or this community. But the bottom line is I'm super-excited that we are going to be hosting the match."
Black expects Gulf Breeze to test the Bulldogs.
"Coach Matt Alt does an outstanding job," Black said. "They have a very disciplined team."
"We are excited to be matched up against the Gulf Breeze Dolphins."
