LAUREL HILL — Scott Varnum, the Laurel Hill School girls basketball coach is confident his Hobo team played better than the final score indicated in Thursday night’s game against District 1-1A power Ponce de Leon.

When the final horn sounded the Pirates had a 58-30 win. But Varnum pointed out the scoreboard didn’t tell the whole story.

“I’m proud of my girls tonight,” he said. “They (the Hoboes) made some runs on them (the Pirates). There are some people that are going to look the score and not understand that we played a better game than the score indicated.

“The girls didn’t quit. For the most part I thought we handled their pressure really well. And 0ur rebounding — we did a real good job on the boards.”

PDL’s Hannah Howell scored the first basket of the night 36 seconds after the opening tip and the Pirates the lead they would never relinquish.

An August Brown free throw for Ponce made it 3-0 with 6:55 left in the first quarter.

Jhanea Griffin got the Hoboes into the scoring column with 6:42 left in the period, but the 3-2 score was as close as Laurel Hill (1-4) would get the rest of the game.

The Pirates closed out the first quarter with a 17-10 run to lead 20-12 at the end of the period.

Five different PDL players scored in the first stanza, which was a sign to how the game would unfold.

While the Pirates shared the wealth in the scoring the Hoboes continued to look inside to Griffin for points. Griffin scored six of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter.

She did get some help from a Ty DeAndrade 3-pointer and a basket in the paint from freshman post player Gracie Reese.

The high octane Pirate offense was less explosive in the second quarter scoring just nine points. But the Pirate defense held the Hoboes to three points as PDL had a 29-15 lead at the half.

The second half was more of the same with the Pirates spreading the ball and scoring around while Laurel Hill continued to work the ball inside to Griffin.

Ponce led 47-21 at the end of the third quarter and finished off the game by outscoring the Hoboes 11-9 in the fourth quarter.

Griffin was the only Hobo to score in double figures. DeAndrade and Reese each scored five points. Jessica Fickett scored Laurel Hill’s other point.

Delilah led the Pirates in scoring with 16 points. Hannah Howell and Devyn Butorac each scored eight points for Ponce de Leon.
